Why See Satchmo at the Waldorf?
I see Skies of Blue
Delve into the complex life of one of the 20th century's most iconic musical figures in Satchmo at the Waldorf. Starring the incomparable John Douglas Thompson, this one man show finds a 69 year-old Louis Armstrong backstage, reminiscing over his career.
A main topic is his relationship with his manager of 40 years Joe Glaser, who became a millionaire of the back of Louis's success, but then left the performer out of his will. It's a decision which was indicative of the pre-civil rights era in which Louis found success, and leaves him questioning his non-confrontational stance towards racism and intolerance. Satchmo at the Waldorf reveals the man behind the legend, centred on an extraordinary performance from Thompson.
Opening night: 2 March 2018
