Epic classical compositions
Experience the timeless brilliance of Gustav Holst's monumental seven-part piece The Planets, hailed as one of the most enduring classical compositions of the 20th Century, with the Houston Symphony! Conducted by Andrew Manze, the concert will also feature Tchaikovsky's timeless and only Violin Concerto, one of the composers' most beloved across the globe. Violinist Augustin Hadelich stunningly takes the lead on the work, one that was once deemed unplayable' due to its technical difficulty.
The Planets is Holst's most renowned creation, composed between 1914 and 1916. Contrary to popular belief, the work is not centered around the Roman Gods but rather draws inspiration from astrology, a subject that deeply fascinated Holst during that era. Each movement captures the distinct character and essence of the celestial bodies, reaching for the range of emotions and passions they evoke within us.
Written in 1878 in a Swiss resort following the breakdown of his marriage, the Violin Concerto is considered a welcome addition to the composer's oeuvre and despite its difficulties for players, has gone on to become a popular request in the repertoire.
