Released to much critical fanfare in 1995, Ron Howard's historical space drama Apollo 13 boldly took audiences where few men had been before, garnering 19 Academy Award nominations and two wins for its breathtakingly accurate portrayal of the harrowing 1970 lunar mission that put the lives of three astronauts (played by Tom Hanks, Bill Paxman and Kevin Bacon) at risk. Experience their out-of-this-world journey during the first ever live screening and score, fittingly presented by the Houston Symphony.
James Horner's sweeping score interweaves with realistic depictions of outer-space, many agree the 23 year old film stands up to the special effects of today, to tell the story of astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Freds Haise. The trio encounter life-threatening obstacles when an on-board explosion destroys most of their oxygen supply and electricity, forcing them to abandon their moon-landing mission as they attempt to return home safely with the help of a team of forcing NASA flight controllers.
