Houston Grand Opera - Turandot at Brown Theater

Why see Houston Grand Opera - Turandot?

Puccini's final masterpiece

Puccini's ice-cold Princess returns in this arresting and vibrant new production from masterful creative Robert Wilson, replete with stunning sets, lighting, and movement that breathes fascinating new life into the story. Following the tale of the titular Turandot, a Princess who vows only him who completes three impossible tasks will earn her hand in marriage, and the Prince who takes up the challenge, Turandot is a grand operatic experience in every sense of the word.

The Story of Turandot

As her realm faces upheaval, peace depends on Turandot choosing a suitor, but after swearing off men after the violent death of a beloved ancestor, it's no easy task for even the most ardent admirer. When the exiled Prince Calaf decides to try his hand at Turandot's mind-bending challenges, it seems the bloodthirsty ruler may have met her match. Don't miss this opulent production that embodies the spirit of this strange tale of ruthlessness and love hard-won.

A Rare Opportunity

It was cheering to see the international cast truly enjoyed being a part of this show during a rowdy, Texas-sized standing ovation. The audience obviously loved it too. Robert Wilson's style is distinct and often imitated, but this is the real deal: expect a non-naturalistic approach, rich lighting and colors and funky stylized movements. Some humor too. Since this is not old-fashioned opera, you might enjoy the production more if you know a little about what to expect. Younger adults and mature teens might also be receptive to the outside-the-box style. That said, this is Turandot and HGO: expect amazing music from singers and orchestra, huge cast, ambitious sets. Dramatic soprano Tamara Wilson was resplendent as the icy princess. Plus you'll be treated to the world's favorite aria, Nessun Dorma, by tenor Kristian Benedikt - but only after intermission. The enthusiastic standing ovation and the beaming cast proved Houston is ready to enjoy great opera again. I hope you can see it. ... Read more
