A Rare Opportunity

5/5

It was cheering to see the international cast truly enjoyed being a part of this show during a rowdy, Texas-sized standing ovation. The audience obviously loved it too. Robert Wilson's style is distinct and often imitated, but this is the real deal: expect a non-naturalistic approach, rich lighting and colors and funky stylized movements. Some humor too. Since this is not old-fashioned opera, you might enjoy the production more if you know a little about what to expect. Younger adults and mature teens might also be receptive to the outside-the-box style. That said, this is Turandot and HGO: expect amazing music from singers and orchestra, huge cast, ambitious sets. Dramatic soprano Tamara Wilson was resplendent as the icy princess. Plus you'll be treated to the world's favorite aria, Nessun Dorma, by tenor Kristian Benedikt - but only after intermission. The enthusiastic standing ovation and the beaming cast proved Houston is ready to enjoy great opera again. I hope you can see it.

I was really looking forward to this performance. It was cold, sterile and disappointing. The costumes and set were uninspiring. The performances were repetitive and lackluster. Wish I'd stayed home.

Worst Rendition of Turandot

Have previously seen Turandot at HGO and London and this was for my sister and me a waste of money. No scenery, no choreagraphy, no interaction or emotion between characters. Left at intermission. Couldn't take one more twirl of the tree or the characters. This is a choral rendition of Turandot and far from a pleasuant, emotive and beautiful opera - one of my favorites, turned into a total dissapointment.
