Tchaikovsky's Pathetique
The Houston Symphony kicks off the new year with this deeply evocative symphony from the great Tchaikovsky. Famous for his Christmas work, The Nutcracker, this composition, aptly named Pathetique is full of emotion. Transporting the listener from amazing highs to devastating lows Tchaikovsky's Pathetique is an edge of your seat experience, expertly performed from the Houston Symphony.
Before Pathetique was written, Tchaikovsky was experiencing a period of depression over his talent and had torn up the beginnings of his sixth symphony. However, the composer's passion was reborn as he began composing Pathetique, writing to his brother to say, "I am now wholly occupied with the new work ... and it is hard for me to tear myself away from it. I believe it comes into being as the best of my works ... I told you that I had completed a Symphony which displeased me, and I tore it up. Now I have composed a new Symphony which I certainly shall not tear up."
