Why See Houston Symphony - Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue?
An American Classic
The new year starts with jazz! Join the Houston Symphony for this rhythmic program, headlined by Gershwin's 20th Century sultry and unforgettable Rhapsody in Blue. Conducted by and featuring the talents of Jeffery Kahane on the ivories, you'll also be treated to Le Jazz Hot-inspired works from Milhaud and Ravel and a special Brian Eno flavored spectacle from Tito Andres.
Somewhat inspired by a steely rattling on a train journey to Boston, Gershwin wrote of his masterpiece ' I heard it as a sort of musical kaleidoscope of America, of our vast melting pot, of our unduplicated national pep, of our metropolitan madness.' It premiered in 1924 and by 1927 had sold a million copies!
Opening night: 4 January 2019
