Augustin Hadelich Performs Sibelius' Violin Concerto
Renowned for his dynamic presence on the podium and a deep bond with the ensemble that's evident in their show-stopping performances of classical masterworks, Andres Orozco-Estrada leads a vibrant program of Brahms and Sibelius. The resident Houston Symphony music director welcomes back Grammy Award-winning violinist Augustin Hadelich for a rousing showcase of jaw-dropping skill and technical brilliance during Sibelius' demanding Violin Concerto.
Elevating the solo violin to equal status with the other orchestral sections, the concerto begins tranquilly, before the violin gains emotional momentum and passionately traverses its highest and lowest registers. Growing increasingly virtuosic, the movement resolves in a bold coda featuring wide violin octaves and intricate counterpoint that ties together the concerto's themes. It is the only work for the instrument by the great late-Romantic era composer.
