Why see Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Houston - The Gondoliers?
Satire Set In Venice
The sun-drenched setting of Venice comes alive in Houston with The Gondoliers, one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most joyful and dance-infused comic operas. Using the Venetian setting to deliver a biting but lighthearted satire on class and romance, The Gondoliers was W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s twelfth comic opera together, premiering at London’s Savoy Theatre in December 1889. The Gilbert & Sullivan society of Houston revive the classic this summer - don’t miss it!
What Is The Story?
Two charming, newlywed gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri, have their world turned upside-down when they discover that one of them is actually the heir to the throne of the kingdom of Barataria… but no one knows which brother is the true king. Whisked away to rule Barataria jointly with a fiercely egalitarian ethos where "everyone is somebody" the brothers face a hilarious breakdown of royal decorum in this delightful classic.
