Houston Grand Opera - The Pearl Fishers
The Houston Grand Opera presents George Biszet's early masterwork

This three-act opera... has an exotic plot, rich orchestral imagery and a number of arias to boot. And yet, it's almost solely remembered today for an extract that many think is a stand-alone piece of music: The Pearl Fishers' Duet.

The Houston Grand Opera presents George Biszet's early masterwork
Before Carmen, there was the Pearl Fishers. Having just won the prestigious Prix de Rome prize, composing legend Georges Biszet wrote the three-act opera before his 25th birthday in 1863, heralding his grand mastery of opera with its richly melodic score and evocative instrumentation. Don't miss this rousing revival by Houston Grand Opera, featuring Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecien and American tenor Lawrence Brownlee.
Together they'll lead the cast through a story of love amongst the ancients as well as the Pearl Fishers' duet - one of the most popular duets in all of the grand opera tradition. Set in the exotic climes of Ceylon, the tale follows the love triangle between two best friends and a newly arrived priestess, who has come to bless their pearl harvest. Love, lust and tragedy encompass this musical feast for the eyes, ears and soul.
