Houston Grand Opera: Faust

Why see Houston Grand Opera: Faust?

A devilish opera

The ultimate in cautionary tales, Faust is the sinister story of Doctor Faust, an aged academic for whom books and science have not provided the answers he seeks. When he realises love and life have passed him by, his thoughts turn to self-murder, only to be saved by the most unlikely associate. Returning to Brown Theater for the 2026/27 season, this production from Sir David McVicar updates the action to Paris in the Belle Epoque and stars Matthew Polenzani and Pretty Yende in her HGO debut as Marguerite.

First performed in Paris in 1859, Faust is a powerhouse grand opera, told in 5 parts and based upon Goethe's book. The idea of a Faustian pact has been passed down through the decades, based on the unlucky deal with the devil made by the titular character.

ENTER MEPHISTOPHELES

Once the bargain is stuck, Doctor Faust finds himself a handsome young gentleman once again, ready to experience the hedonism and seduction he feels he has missed out on. As bait, Mephistopheles places the innocent Marguerite in his way. Once debauched by the infernal pair, she must find a way to deliver herself from temptation and save her soul...
