Considered to be the classic ballet of the romantic era, Giselle first wowed audiences in Paris in 1841 and has continued to weave its kinetic magic over the decades to become a much-performed and internationally beloved work. Don't miss the enchanting tale of love, heartbreak, redemption, and myth as revived by the Houston Ballet in this much-praised 2016 staging from Stanton Welch.
With music by Adolphe Adam and a libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Theophile Gautier, Giselle is the sad tale of a young, fragile village girl who falls for a seemingly perfect man. She is besotted by his mysterious character, and upon his unmasking as a betrothed Duke, she dies tragically.
But Giselle's story does not end there. From her grave, she is summoned by the Queen of the Wilis, the ethereal Myrtha, and indoctrinated into the fantasy coven of women who lead men to their deaths via the medium of dance. But will Giselle be able to kill the Duke? Or will her love for him transcend the power of evil?
