Leo Kottke: Funny, Poignant & Engaging
The tone and energy emitting from Leo Kottke’s guitar had the nearly sold-out Sellersville audience enraptured. With rapid-fire lines and emotional instrumental moments, Kottke delighted the enthralled crowd. His singing was effective. His stories—funny, often disjointed—were interspersed between the guitar-playing. At one moment, after Kottke finished a piece that had a rare bum note, he sarcastically undercut his playing, implying through his deadpan tone that he had messed up. He then replayed just the problematic passage, momentarily looking up at the crowd while intoning that he should have worked out the piece before the crowd arrived. He said it with such impeccable comedic timing that the audience laughed. I doubt it was planned. No matter. The resonant tone that emerged from his guitar all night was so beautiful, moving, and engaging that it was simply delightful to watch this master musician play with the warmth and brilliance that has made him a guitar hero.
