The Groundbreaking Musical
Debuting on Broadway in 1975, The Wiz is Charlie Smalls' radical reinvention of the Wizard of Oz. Though it follows the same story, The Wiz has an entirely African-American cast, and a gospel and soul infused score. The winner of seven Tony Awards, and later made famous by its silver screen adaptation which starred Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, its a boisterous and groundbreaking chapter in musical theatre history.
What is The Wiz About?
When a tornado hits their home, thirteen year old Dorothy and her trusty dog Toto are transported to Oz, a magical world populated by witches and munchkins. Together with her new friends the Tin Man, the Lion and the Scarecrow she sets off down the Yellow Brick Road in search of the Wizard, the one person who can return her home to her family. Their journey is set to a classic score, that includes the numbers 'Ease on Down the Road', 'Be a Lion,' 'Soon as I Get Home,' and Don't Nobody Bring Me No Bad News'.
