Celebrating 75 years
As part of their 50th anniversary, Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) are celebrating the best that musical theatre has to offer. Also celebrating a big milestone, Oklahoma!, who has spent 75 years as one of the world's most favorite musicals, will be kicking off the TUTS' 2018/2019 season.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's most prolific work, Oklahoma! has captured the hearts and minds of audiences across the globe for the last 75 years. The original production ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances when it first opened in 1943 and has spawned countless revivals (lets not forget that Hugh Jackman performance at London's National Theatre in 1999), national tours and an Academy Award Winning feature length movie.
Oh What a Beautiful Mornin'
Based on Lynn Riggs' play, Green Grow the Lilacs, Oklahoma! portrays life for inhabitants of the rural farmland in Oklahoma during the 1900s, and the love that blossoms between Curly and Laurey. With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, take a trip on the priory with tunes like "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" and "People Will Say We're In Love" and indulge in the nostalgic beauty that is Oklahoma!
What is Oklahoma! about?
It's 1900 and the farmers and cowboys who live on the rural plains of the Western Indian Territory are in fierce dispute. Curly, a handsome cowboy is in love with Laurey, an independent and confident farm girl but, the course of true love never did run smooth. Battling the ever growing disharmony between the cowboys and farmers, Curly and Laurey must traverse the tricky terrain of feuding communities and scorned lovers to start their new life in the brand new state of Oklahoma!
