Susan Vega's Touching Tribute to Carson McCuller
Part biographical-narrative, part multimedia theatre piece, part tender tribute to the leading literary light of Carson McCuller, Susan Vega's Lover Beloved comes to Houston's Alley Theatre for a limited run this Winter. Penned by Vega and Tony Winning composer Duncan Sheik, the show features a one-woman performance by Vega as she blends her songs with the story of the iconic writer's life.
A novelist, short story writer, essayist, poet and playwright, Carson McCullers led a tragic life punctuated by the bright sparks of her literary genius. Writing in the Southern Gothic oeuvre, her stories of isolated misfits and outcasts mirror the traumas she suffered from a young age, the suicide of her father and later her husband, her unrequited loves with other women and her ill health. However sorrowful her earthly life, her writing was praised for its forward-thinking on race, gender and relationships.
