company premiere

Houston Ballet continues their commitment to presenting innovative and powerful pieces by becoming the first American company to stage this production of ballet legend Sir Kenneth MacMillan's compelling Mayerling. An adaptation of the true tale of a tragic murder-suicide in the heart of Vienna in 1889, Mayerling is a lavish affair set to a powerful score by John Lanchbery from compositions by Franz Liszt.

synopsis

Based on true events, Mayerling concerns the newly engaged Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary. Pressured into marriage, Rudolf desperately attempts to escape the upcoming nuptials and finds solace in the arms of Mary Vetsera, the daughter of his former mistress. In the face of increasing displeasure at his behavior from his soon to be in laws and political intrigue that has enveloped friends and enemies alike, Rudolf hatches an infernal plan. Finally he'll be released from his vows and able to spend eternity with Mary. But at what cost?
