STUNNING LIGHTING

I thoroughly enjoyed this play. I had never seen 12th Night before, and there are a lot of characters to keep track of. A quick review of the synopsis helped a lot. But the visual display, created by lighting and shadows, was absolutely mesmerizing. After watching the matinee’, I wanted to turn around and see the evening performance. I will likely see it again before the run is through, not only for the play but also for the magic they created in telling the story. It was light, funny, fun and had a definite Shakespearean flavor to it. But when I am talking about this play four years from now, it will be the visual effects that I remember most.

VERY ENJOYABLE

Just came out of the Friday night performance and really delighted by such a fun evening. There was a large group of high school kids who clearly knew all of the moments in the play (probably studying it now) and they and the rest of the audience were clearly engaged. Shakespearean dialog isn't always the easiest to follow, but I very much appreciated this modern interpretation with its multi-cultural cast. Lots of big laughs.

DISAPPOINTING AND WITHOUT A SENSE OF DIRECTION

The set was the star of the show with water effects and bridges, a rising platform and a dramatically lit curving stairway. All quite mesmerizing at times. Sadly, the performance paled in comparison. The two lead women characters, both mourning the loss of brothers, never seemed the bit sad or reflective. The myriad of crossed romances was never believable or interesting. The lesser characters were played with lesser effort. Only Uncle Belch seemed interested in trying to capture the audience’s attention and was a welcome interlude to the disinterested antics of his cohorts. And all of this was leading to a bizarre Bollywood inspired musical ending where the entire cast was on stage singing and dancing. A young teenage girl sitting in front of me loved the performance and cheered mightily. More telling, she was one of a small handful of attendees standing at the end, and even that number was swelled by those in a hurry to escape the theater. A disappointing night.
