The world's greatest cellist performs pieces by Gershwin and Dvorak
The incomparable Yo-Yo Ma joins the Houston Symphony for a special concert as part of their 2016-17 season of Symphony Specials. Ma, perhaps the most famous classical musician alive today, has 17 Grammy Awards to his name and, through his insatiable appetite for experimenting with genre and style, has elevated the cello to whole new heights.
On February 4, Yo-Yo Ma and the Houston Symphony Orchestra will perform two pieces. First up is Gershwin's winding symphonic poem An American in Paris, which was premiered in 1928 and was inspired by Gershwin's time in the French capital. It would go on to inspire the MGM movie of the same name. The evening's second piece is Dvorak's Cello Concerto, often considered the finest concerto of its type ever written.
