LISTEN, LISTEN, O PEASANTS
One of the most popular operas of it's time, Donizetti's clamorous Elixir of Love is still enjoying its place in the international repertoire nearly 200 years later. A hearty romantic comedy, it's the story of a love-struck peasant, Nemorino and Adina, the wealthy and beautiful object of his affections. When Adina turns him down, he finds himself inspired by the legend of Tristan & Isolde, specifically, how to get hold of a love potion and change his fortunes...
I'M RICH, AND YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, WHAT'S IN THE ELIXIR OF LOVE?
Set on the Italian Riviera in the 1950s, a poor villager dreams of winning the heart of one Adina, a beautiful (and rich) local landowner. But Adina rejects his advances in favor of a more free outlook on love. Enter the dashing Sergeant Belcore who attempts to trap the wily Adina in marriage. On overhearing the story of Tristan & Isolde, he is inspired by a certain love potion and goes to the travelling quack doctor Dulcamara for help. The doctor happily takes his money in return for an enchanting elixir (really just cheap red wine) and sends Nemorino out on his way, hoping he'll mistake drunkenness for magic as he attempts once more to win his beloved.
